Elders
“Here is a trustworthy saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task.”
1 Timothy 3:1 (NIV)
The office of elder is also called shepherd and overseer.
At Mount Carmel our elders are called on the basis of the the scriptural qualifications of 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:6-9.
The elders are the spiritual leaders, overseers, and shepherds of the congregation and are to be examples of Godly living.
The ministry of our elders, as prescribed in the New Testament, is to “oversee” the church. This can be described generally as shepherding the congregation.
Our elders are to be active participants in the spiritual life of the Church. They are to model the values of being a member of Mount Carmel by participating in the group life of the Church. They serve in the ministry of prayer and the anointing of the sick.
Shepherding also means the elders are responsible to protect the church from unbiblical or false teaching and biblical immorality.
“Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.”
Hebrews 13:7 (NIV)
