I’m so thankful for the Happy Church and their ministry in Jackson, Kentucky. The Happy Church came to be in January of 2002 and started in the home of a few of their members. From there, the church moved into a storefront in the heart of downtown Jackson. Upon further growth, in January 2007 they acquired their current property on 6 acres where their ministry has become a vital resource to the community. You don’t have to look long, and you’ll be able to see where God has been at work through the Happy Church, but it certainly hasn’t always been easy. The Happy Church is in the foothills of Appalachia in Breathitt County. According to a recent census Breathitt County is the third poorest county in the whole country.

Here’s what The Happy Church staff tells us “While we have our share of adult outreach opportunities, our primary focus is on children. It is estimated that approx. 80% of our children have drug-affected homes. We feed kids nearly every time the doors are open, we provide clothing, hygiene products, new shoes for school, school supplies, complete Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, Christmas gifts, blankets, coats, hoodies, hats, gloves, and more.” Whether it’s combating poverty, a culture of drug abuse, or recovering after two devastating floods that drastically affected the Happy Church campus and impacted so many of their community neighbors, the Happy Church continues to have a lasting impact in Jackson, Kentucky and beyond.

For the last 8 years, Mount Carmel has partnered with the Happy Church in various ways. We’ve sent teams to the Happy Church to assist in building projects and flood recovery and we’ve supported their efforts to build up and support the kids and families they minister to. While it’s just the beginning of summer, the Happy Church team is already gearing up for the beginning of the next school year and how they can make a make a lasting impact on families, as they support and distribute many of the needed “back to school” items.

This is where you come in! Over the next few weeks, until July 9th, we’re going to be collecting school supplies and Walmart gift cards that will be taken directly to the Happy Church so they can bless and support students and families who are in need. Here are the items you can purchase and drop off at the church.
